About Kamloops Scout

Kamloops is a mid-sized city at the confluence of the North and South Thompson Rivers, sitting at the heart of BC’s interior. Surrounded by dry, rolling hills and a high-desert landscape unlike anywhere else in Canada, Kamloops is a hub for outdoor adventure — particularly mountain biking, hiking, and river sports — while also offering a lively downtown and a growing food and craft-beverage scene.

The city’s warm, dry climate (one of the sunniest in BC) makes it a year-round destination. Sun Peaks Resort, just 45 minutes north, is BC’s second-largest ski area. The Thompson River system offers world-class fishing and paddling. And the city’s network of urban trails brings mountain bikers and hikers into the hills right from the downtown core.

Getting Around

Kamloops is a spread-out city, and a car is useful for reaching outlying neighbourhoods and attractions. Downtown Kamloops is walkable, with most restaurants, shops, and the riverside pathway system accessible on foot. Transit covers the city adequately, though driving is most practical for day trips to Sun Peaks or the surrounding region.

Food & Drink

Kamloops has a diverse restaurant scene for a city its size, with strong options in everything from casual pub fare to upscale dining. The craft beer scene is particularly well developed, with several well-regarded local breweries. Riverfront dining along the Thompson and Victoria Street’s restaurant row are the main concentrations for eating and drinking out.

Outdoors

The Kamloops trail network is exceptional — the city is consistently ranked among Canada’s top mountain biking destinations, with trails for all abilities winding through the dry hills surrounding downtown. The Thompson and North Thompson rivers offer fishing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Sun Peaks Resort provides alpine skiing and snowboarding in winter, and hiking and mountain biking in summer.

Tips for Visitors

Summers in Kamloops are genuinely hot and dry — temperatures regularly exceed 35°C in July and August. Bring sunscreen and plan outdoor activities for early morning or evening. The Kamloops Farmers Market runs weekly in summer and is a great way to experience the local food scene. For mountain biking, visit the Kamloops Bike Ranch for beginner-friendly access to the trail network.
